VoIP Engineer/Technician (Remote)

The Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corporation is an exciting news and journalism organization on a mission to democratize the news for the public benefit.

To help support our mission we are looking for a VoIP engineer who would embrace the opportunity to take a role with our growing organization.

The position requires a professional who is adept at coming up with solutions when problems arise, bootstrapping solutions, is a fantastic communicator, is team-oriented, and understands how to work in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment.

Part-time contract to start with long-term potential.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and support VoIP services (phones, video, etc.)
  • Provide VTC administration and coordination services
  • Manage and maintain all Telecommunications Service resources (e.g., hardware, operating system (software and applications) that are required to provide Designated Services (LAN/WAN/VPN/Firewall/ VoIP / Routers / Switches / VTC/IDS/IPS and wireless connectivity)
  • Perform network systems management and troubleshooting (e.g., performance, problem, change and capacity monitoring)
  • Provide service and technical coordination for WAN services with the USDA telecommunications service provider
  • Manage network equipment O/S and apply necessary patches, upgrades, install firmware and special security updates
  • Maintain and provide accurate information on all network devices, including software installed, revision levels, and hardware configurations.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of Asterisk SIP/VoIP Telephony operational experience
  • Solid understanding of the Linux Operating System
  • Excellent TCP/IP networking fundamentals
  • Experience troubleshooting carrier and various connectivity issues both IP and TDM
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills with a focus on root cause and prevention
  • Experience working with telecom carriers turning up and troubleshooting IP and or TDM circuits
  • Strong sense of ownership, bias for action, customer obsession, and earned trust.
  • Must have excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Expertise in many of the following technologies and protocols: BGP, OSPF, SIP, RTP, IP, TCP, UDP, DNS, DHCP, T1/E1, Ethernet, firewalls, IT security best practices
  • CCNA, VoIP System Certification from a major voice communication system manufacturer, or other equivalent/applicable technical certification.

This position reports to our Washington, DC office, however remote applicants anywhere in the world are encouraged.
