Signal Noise reinvents the way people experience data. With a rich heritage in data visualisation, we create digital products, services, and stories in and about complex, data-rich environments from Smart Cities to Industrial IoT and Finance. We aim to change behaviour by having a measurable impact on people. As part of The Economist Group we punch above our weight for a small studio, working with large international organizations on critical projects.

We are looking for an experienced front end coder to lead building the experiential part of an ongoing project for a recognised brand client. Working hand in hand with the design team, you will be expected to collaborate closely to realise a high level of polish on this critical part of the client’s strategic vision, while not sacrificing performance or accessibility.

You will have experience with animation, using SVGs and ideally Lottie, all within React and ideally Next.js. You will also be able to collaborate with front and back end engineers through the build phase of the project to deliver a high quality, optimised, rich interactive experience. There will be a lead on the project but you will be expected to take the reins going forward.

You will be joining a large greenfield project for our global multinational client, combining expertly researched data and modelling with rich experiential visuals. The aim is to help their clients - some of the largest and most influential businesses in the world - navigate to the best outcome from an uncertain business climate.

This contract is for 3 months initially, with immediate start.

Media will include films, images and written works. We'll be building a CMS (in Wagtail / Django) which will make the content available via a simple API. We're looking for a hand with the frontend app, which we'd like to build using React / Next / Vercel.

We are looking for an experienced full stack developer, specialising in front end to help build an upcoming project for a household name client. Working closely with the Tech Lead who will provide oversight, you will be responsible for much of the development of the front end and all of the (small) back end application, making sure that it’s performant, extensible and high quality.

You will be an expert in React and have experience with Next.JS, as well as proven ability to design a pragmatic and scalable solution, balancing sometimes competing objectives. Devops and AWS experience would be real benefits. You’ll collaborate closely with the rest of the development team as well as the design and strategy team (around 6 people overall) to ensure we make the right tradeoffs in this ambitious project.

You will be helping to build out the MVP of a geospatial data exploration product for internal use by a globally recognised brand. While the data set and broad use cases have been tested, there are interesting challenges at all levels of this project, from how to represent aggregate data in rich mapping interfaces, to writing performant high-bandwidth code and hosting under Chinese data law.

This contract will be for 3 months, with an ideal start of 14th December.

Economist Impact

Junior/Mid level Frontend visual developer

Location restricted
This job is restricted to tax residents of UK, but we detected your IP as outside of the country. Please only apply if you are a UK tax resident.

Economist Impact partners with corporations, foundations, NGOs and governments across big themes including sustainability, health and the changing shape of globalisation to catalyse change and enable progress.

Signal Noise and the wider digital production team have a long heritage of high quality data visualisation and storytelling, and of other creative technical work.

We have several short projects starting soon; they're mostly 2-3 weeks each but due to the volume we can offer a rolling contract, likely for up to a year. Due to the nature of the work we're open to different start dates or durations.

The work is primarily front end layout and markup, with animation and polish required across the board. It's all based on React templates and component libraries for content types and e.g. headers and footers, and for analytics etc.

Some projects are a single page, others small microsites; many involve data visualisation and charting, so D3 or SVG experience would be helpful. Almost all the work is hosted under https://impact.economist.com and is Economist branded and client sponsored.

Measured is a small technology consultancy building high quality web applications for our customers. Our clients range from small startups to large corporations, including HubbleHQ, Hilton Hotels, BT and more.

We're looking for two Senior React Developers to help with projects across two clients. Fully remote, £550 / day, self-assess IR35.

The first project is delivering the UI for our next project with an office space platform. We've been working with them to evolve their product to be more suitable for the current climate, acting as an independent squad and delivering projects over 2 month iterations. This project will involve building React/Next.js features alongside our Django developers.

The second project is with a hospitality firm, where we're part-way through delivering WYSIWYG tooling for their existing React components for use in their CMS. We need extra senior back-of-the-front React muscle, building mostly tooling and making architectural decisions rather than building UI components.

Both projects are 2 months, with possibility of extension. We try to maintain long-running, trusting relationships with our suppliers and will consider part-timers and gaps between contracts.

We're looking for a talented Senior Front-end Engineer, who can set high standards and drive technical delivery forward while being pragmatic and understanding the bigger picture and the context. Despite this role being short-term, you're a strategic thinker and bring a lot of expertise and experience into this collaboration and are great at weighing up the pros and cons of potential solutions and at communicating this to the rest of the dev team, as well as to non-tech stakeholders.

  • Write high-quality code: As Senior Engineer your primary responsibility would be to develop software. You will be expected to produce readable code that scales.
  • Own your work: You will be responsible for the whole process of delivery, from the initial refinement to production deployment.
  • Mentor: You will be expected to mentor more junior developers in a form of pair programming or learning sessions
  • Solutionise together: You’ll work closely with the Product Manager and Product Designer to understand what problem is being solved and why, and brainstorm solutions together - with you owning the technical implementation side. We believe that magical things happen when the squad aligns often and early.

About us

Atos Cerebro is the full-stack engineering division of Atos. We’re a cross-skilled team of product, design, engineering and data experts. We help our clients build, deliver and support digital products and services.

Each dedicated product team is responsible for all aspects of what they are building, operating independently. This not only allows for fast-paced development and pivots, it facilitates passionate, close-knit teams that work closely together to achieve their goals.

Our teams work in close collaboration with our clients and their users. Many of us have experience across a wide range of industries from finance, gaming, retail, government, energy and media to name a few.

Who you are

You enjoy learning about the customer’s pains and gains, and building products which solve real-world problems. You can work autonomously in a small cross-functional team and can communicate well with team members. Equally you are able to effectively contribute to technology decisions across multiple teams.

You are firmly focussed on delivering business value and results to end-users. Along with this you have a commercial mindset, with demonstrated ability to make fact based trade offs.

You have prior experience building greenfield products for unfamiliar industries. Familiar with the entire software development lifecycle.

Experience working in start-ups or large corporations (ideally both!) is also a huge benefit.

You can demonstrate a broad knowledge of available modern technologies and like to experiment with finding the best solution for specific tasks outside your core skill set.

What you'll do

You should be able to demonstrate prior professional experience of the following activities that you’ll do:

  • Build UIs using modern tools such as React, TypeScript, CSS-in-JS, Apollo GraphQL, Cypress
  • Build backend services using Node.js, and knowing when to use relational vs non-relational databases
  • Deliver high-quality, well-tested code
  • Communicate with other teams and individuals to plan, coordinate and seek feedback
  • Pitch in where needed as a valued member of an autonomous, cross-functional team
Who you are
  • Enjoy building user-friendly, data-rich JavaScript/HTML/CSS applications
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • You have experience deploying production applications (e.g. GCP, AWS)
  • Rave about the benefits that CI / CD has given you in previous projects
  • Experienced with modern JavaScript coding, testing, debugging and automation techniques
  • Care deeply about performance, accessibility and API design
  • Have a high bar for user experience quality
