Our client, a financial organisation has an exciting opportunity to join their team as a Database Administrator for a period of 6 months. Our client is seeking a professional person who has proven experience as a Database Administrator, preferably in the financial or insurance industry.

About the role:

DBA is responsible for the strong, organising, presenting, using and analysing data and database management software. The successful candidate will regularly perform routine tests and modifications to ensure that our client’s database is performing and running correctly. If a problem occurs, troubleshooting the programs and hardware will be required. Communication on any findings, repairs or changes with other administrators in the company will be required. The DBA is also responsible for managing the workload of the team and ensure the operational effectiveness of the team.

Requirements:

  • Proactively monitors performance of database systems resources and query throughout.
  • Optimize SQL Code as necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain database storage resources.
  • Monitor and maintain database maintenance plans for backups, index rebuild/defragment, and database statistics.
  • SQL Server Installation, Upgrades, Migrations and Configuration.
  • Install database software service packs cumulative updates as necessary.
  • Maintain database documentations as required.
  • Maintain and administer database security access.
  • Perform database ad-hoc backups and restores.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database connectivity issues.
  • Follow Change Management processes to implement database configuration changes.
  • Follow Problem Management processes to troubleshoot and resolve recurring issues.
  • Proactively monitor and respond to MSSQL database alerts.
  • On-call requirements to ensure 24x7 support of database operations if required.

Experience & Skills:

  • Experience of administering SQL Server 2008/2012 databases.
  • Experience with monitoring & diagnostic tools.
  • Experience working with Windows Server, including Active Directory and disk configurations.
  • Customer service, communication, problem-solving and technical writing skills.
  • Technical writing experience.
  • 6 years’ experience as a database administrator in SQL Server environment.
  • 4 years of SQL Server database development/programming.
  • Speed and accuracy in troubleshooting issues.
  • Strong data management skills.
  • Strong prioritisation skills and ability to meet multiple concurrent deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Organised and good at time management.
  • Results driven.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS/BA) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

As a member of the Finance Systems and Change Team you will report to the ADS Team Manager working within the newly created IT Function.

The ADS team is responsible for delivering application support, development and management of the ADS to support the growing requirements of the Finance Data Management Team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To perform end to end testing of regulatory EDM application under tight timescales. Testing will involve both functional enhancements as well as fixes for production incidents.
  • To work with technical and business stakeholders in understanding scope of new functionality and effect of defect fixing for production incidents.
  • To define and execute all levels of end to end testing to a pre-defined level of quality and agreed timescales e.g. test scripts, test cases, test conditions and test data.
  • To analyse requirements and functional / technical specification to determine acceptance criteria for end to end testing.
  • To report and prioritise faults identified during end to end testing cycles using the specified fault management system and test subsequent fixes.
  • To demonstrate excellent hands on testing experience and a detailed knowledge/ experience of test management and defect management.
  • To work proactively with stakeholders, developers to ensure that test faults are understood and resolved and that appropriate regression testing is undertaken.
  • To work individually to proactively identify improvements in existing test standards, processes and policies for all stages of the M&GP development processes.
  • To execute manual test scripts as designed.
  • To work with projects to ensure that the regression test suites are updated to reflect the new requirements.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of and experience testing Enterprise Data Management applications such as Markit EDM (highly desirable), Eagle Pace, Goldensource.
  • Solid experience with all aspects of functional testing
  • Extensive experience defining and documenting Test Plans articulating scope & objectives of each test plan.
  • HP Quality Centre experience or Atlassian Jira experience (Essential).
  • Ability to write test scripts based on Software Requirement Specifications
  • Experience of conducting UAT support and interacting with business users
  • Experience in writing queries and scripts through SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2016
  • Experience of testing content management systems and automation tools

SQL DBA/Developer required by global professional services company to provide database support and data services. You will be required to do a number of activities including:
  • Installing, configuring and managing MS SQL 2008, 2012-2017.
  • Coding ETL packages using SSIS or Azure Data Factory to high standard.
  • Configuring High availability, Always On and Replication
  • Configuring MS Azure Database and Managed Instance utilizing Azure features as Geo-Replication.
  • Query Optimization and Performance Tuning
  • Performing Backup and Restore.
  • Provide second and third line support.
  • Setting up Test, DEV, UAT and Production environments
  • Developing solutions to streamline and automate Operations.
  • Documenting database environments and solutions.
Skills:
MUST have experience of the following:
  • Enterprise level SQL Server database management, and experience of Microsoft Azure.
  • Strong experience of administering SQL Server 2008 – SQL 2017.
  • Ability to configure complex database environments comprising of transactional/Merged replication, failover and clustering.
  • Strong Transact-SQL and Query optimisation skills.
  • Strong experience of developing ETL code utilising SSIS or Azure Data Factory.
  • Strong problem solving, troubleshooting and debugging skills.
  • Good knowledge of SQL Server BI suite (SSIS, SSRS and Power BI)
  • Strong knowledge of IDREA and SCOM monitoring tools.
Any knowledge or experience of AWS would be ideal.

The technical environment is certainly stimulating, with an emphasis on managing procedures in SQL Server, as well as working with OLTP/OLAP systems and Excel Powerpivots. Projects will involve an ever increasing focus on migration of data to the cloud, microservices, AWS etc.

Core duties:

  • Managing around 20 SQL Server environments (2008-2016)
  • Management of data extraction into the data warehouse, ensuring that all data is complete, appropriately cleansed and delivered to agreed timelines and accuracy
  • Delivering insight efficiently, and striving to continually improve the automated generation of reports
  • Using strong T-SQL skills to create standards-based reports and stored procedures in SQL Server
  • Ability to build data cubes or queries that can be reused across multiple reports

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • SSAS experience is a must for this role. Please only apply if you have SSAS experience!
  • 5+ years' experience w/ SQL Server 2008 R2 upwards (including SSMS, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS)
  • 5+ years' experience w/ OLTP and OLAP systems
  • A sound understanding of Kimball methodology
  • A sound understanding of T-SQL and performance tuning
  • Be a subject matter expert in BI, including SSRS and Excel Powerpivots
  • Experience of manipulating data formats such as XML, JSON, CSV and text files
  • A sound understanding of product life cycles and release processes

Nice to haves:

  • Backup/Restore and DB failover procedures
  • Redgate Toolbelt
  • Experience with other databases, incl. Postgres, MySQL, and Oracle
  • Experience with SQL Extended Procedures
  • Any experience with financial systems, especially SAP, is a major bonus
  • Any experience of AWS
