Essential Skills

  • 4 years+ experience in an operational role with a cloud platform Azure
  • Experience working with Docker, Kubernetes, AKS, Microsoft Azure with knowledge of cloud-native services (Azure DNS, Application Gateway, Azure SQL Server, App Services, Blob Storage, Load Balancer, WAF) and best-practices for working with technology;
  • Excellent understanding of networking principles (IP addressing, virtual networks, network security and networking models)
  • Understanding of observability and site-reliability principles (SLO's, SLI's) and working with engineering teams to improve the applications and platform;
  • Good understanding of scripting languages for automating manual tasks (e.g. Powershell, additional experience with Python would desirable);

Role Overview: As a Cloud & Application Security Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the security and integrity of our cloud and application infrastructure. Leveraging your expertise in AWS and DevSecOps practices, you will be responsible for implementing Secure by Design and Privacy by Design principles across our systems and SDLC. This role requires hands-on experience with cloud security tools and technologies, along with the ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement and maintain security best practices within AWS cloud infrastructure.
  • Conduct threat assessments and manage attack surfaces to proactively identify and mitigate potential security risks.
  • Configure and manage network security components including DNS, VPC, IGW, WAF, API Gateways, and CloudFront.
  • Utilize AWS CLI and API to interact with cloud services and automate security processes.
  • Securely build and manage Docker containers, ensuring container orchestration security.
  • Perform code security audits, static and dynamic analysis, and implement defensive programming techniques.
  • Define and operate a Security Incident Response process, ensuring timely and effective response to security incidents.
  • Monitor and configure alerting systems to detect and respond to security threats.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to integrate identity and access management solutions, including VPN, MFA, SAML, OAuth2, and KMS.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience across the SDLC 
  • Expertise in threat assessment, data security, and network security at Layer 4 and Layer 7.
  • Proficiency in AWS CLI and API for cloud infrastructure management.
  • Strong understanding of Secure by Design and Privacy by Design principles.
  • AWS Certified Security Specialist certification preferred
  • Experience with container security, including Docker and container orchestration.
  • Familiarity with scripting or programming languages for automation tasks.
  • Experience defining and operating Security Incident Response processes.
  • Knowledge of Windows security, particularly Azure Active Directory.
  • Understanding of cloud-native and 12-Factor applications.

The Role

We are looking for our next key hire, Full-Stack Engineer, on a contract or permanent basis, to continue growing our engineering team. Here, you will take complete, end-to-end ownership of projects across the entire stack. Our ideal candidate has experience building products across the stack and a firm understanding of web frameworks, APIs, databases, and multiple back end languages.

The Full-Stack Engineer would work alongside our Product Owner and our Junior Front-End Developer, and will have a lot of freedom in bringing their expertise to the team and the product. They will report to the CEO directly, and will have an opportunity to build the product up to series A and then build the team from there.

Our Tech

Our application is written in ES6 JavaScript, and our stack includes React, Node, Express, Sequelize and PostgreSQL. 

On the front end we're using React with styled-components, with very heavy use of hooks and exclusively functional components; no Redux, all Contexts.

For the backend we run on Node, serving Express APIs. Across our applications, we use PostgreSQL as our primary data store, with Sequelize interfacing between the database and Express.

Our codebases use ESLint, Prettier, Cypress and Jest to automate testing. We push to GitHub and deploy (continuously) via CircleCI to AWS.

The Responsibilities

  • Work across the full stack, building highly scalable distributed solutions that enable positive user experiences and measurable business growth
  • Develop new features and infrastructure development in support of rapidly emerging business and project requirements
  • Assume leadership of new projects from conceptualisation to deployment
  • Ensure application performance, uptime, and scale, maintaining high standards of code quality and thoughtful application design
  • Work closely with senior internal stakeholder teams including Product, Commercial, Marketing and Operations.
  • Work with modern development methodologies, adhering to best practices and pursuing continued learning opportunities
  • Architect and provide guidance on building end-to-end systems optimised for speed and scale

The Requirements

  • Strong web frontend development experience, e.g. in React; 
  • Strong backend development experience, e.g. in Node.js, Express.js, Sequelize; 
  • Strong experience with AWS; 
  • Working knowledge of infrastructure tooling e.g. Docker, CircleCI;
  • Confident, and able to take initiative in a delivery-focused environment;
