We collaborate with activists, non-profits, foundations, businesses, and movements using the power of storytelling and art to mobilize, advocate, and shape new pathways for change. We engage in work throughout the U.S. as well as in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

BACKGROUND: This project involves the design and development of an interactive website under Resistance Communications (RC) and for the Listening Sessions Project. The Listening Sessions Project provided a space for resettled refugee women and girls to share their complex lived experience, and provide solutions to funders, to those providing services in the US, and to advocates. This website will be a highly visual, engaging, and informative platform for clear target audiences, that shares the learnings from this project and is driven by the voices and solutions of resettled refugee women and girls that were part of this project.

RC is inviting proposals from qualified individuals with a track record of success in designing and producing robust websites, and creating graphic design elements and interactive elements.

DELIVERABLES

  • A highly visual, multi-page website that includes elements such as text, images, video, audio, graphic design and interactive features such as clickable graphics and simple animation.
  • Graphic design and simple animation accents for the site.
  • A user guide and webinar for the RC team to perform content upload, system maintenance and administration.
  • Support and maintenance: Administrative and technical support, quality control for a period of 3 months.
  • Source code handover: Full source code including all developed libraries shall be handed over to RC.

Deliverables clause: Once an individual is selected, the contract may be amended with time and materials to capture new specific developments for the site upon request of the Resistance Communications.

WORK SETTING The work setting for the assignment will include:

Timing and duration of the assignment

  • The duration of the contract will be 6 months and the expected starting date of 1st September 2020.
  • The site development will be ready within 8 weeks, and launch will be ready within 10 weeks from the date of signing the contract.
  • The user manual, webinar and the maintenance of the new webpages will be done from the third month of the contract.

Briefing/debriefing arrangements

  • A first meeting/conference call will be scheduled for the RC team to brief the designer on the background information to develop each of the requested deliverables.
  • The designer will work in close consultation and under the supervision of the RC senior leadership team.
  • The RC team will provide all written content and guidance for graphic design elements to the designer.
  • The designer will make recommendations on a web hosting platform.

WORK PLAN

  • Timeline: The designer will present a timeline and work plan one week after the first meeting including deadlines for content needed from the RC team.
  • Unique look and feel: The designer will develop a unique graphic concept and visual language of the website and submit this to RC for feedback and approval.
  • Visual Brand: Designer will ensure a consistent visual language on the new site by introducing fixed styles in templates ensuring consistency in fonts, formatting, icons, images, layout techniques.
  • Site Flow: Under the guidance and with the input of the RC team, the designer will create a web map with a hierarchy of listed pages for feedback and approval by the RC team.
  • Content input: The designer will input the text and images provided by the RC team to the appropriate pages.
  • Functionalities and Features: Site features to include:
  • 6-8 site pages and multiple page styles;
  • Interactive elements such as clickable images that reveal text and audio, drag and click timelines or similar functions; clickable banner slideshows.
  • Graphic Design Elements: Including infographics, icons, and additional small illustrations and/or accents;
  • Simple animation in site pages to highlight key quotes and data;
  • Social sharing features - including twitter, instagram, and facebook share by text selection or image selection;
  • Search function by type of resource, events, state, story, stakeholder, specific service and issue; Interactive map;
  • A forum for visitors to share comments

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER:

  • Develop a user guide and deliver a webinar for the RC team to perform content upload, system maintenance and administration.

SECURITY, SUPPORT & MAINTENANCE:

  • Site Security: Install any necessary security software or measures to keep the site online and safe for visitors;
  • Administrative and technical support quality control for a period of 3 months;
  • Source code handover: Full source code including all developed libraries shall be handed over to RC.

TASKS:

  • The successful designer will participate in a debriefing session with the RC team to understand the learnings and challenges of the site design process.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Designer should demonstrate and provide examples of previous experience in the performance of similar services as follows:

  • Have at least 7 years of prior experience designing visually appealing and navigation friendly web sites;
  • Familiarity and relevant experience in using different Content Management Systems (CMS),
  • Have a broad knowledge of current web development technologies and design tools in the field, and new software and other web programming languages and programs including use of HTML, XHTML, CSS, XML, XSLT, Macromedia Flash, Java;
  • Have excellent knowledge of recent trends in graphic design, web sites, and social media networking;
  • Demonstrate the ability to create innovative and visually appealing site designs
  • Have at least 3 years of experience in creating compelling graphic designs, infographics and animation elements;
  • Strong ability to design with accessibility in mind.
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to work with deadlines
  • Ability to deliver production-ready digital assets in a wide variety of formats
  • Knowledge and practice of UI/UX principles
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy
  • Social media and email marketing experience a plus
