The American Flood Coalition is a nonpartisan group of nearly 200 elected officials, local leaders, military groups, and businesses that have come together to advocate for national solutions to sea level rise and flooding. We’re a start-up nonprofit organization with deep donor backing, and we do things differently. We aim to change the game with uniquely singular focus on flooding and sea level rise, a creative approach to finding solutions, and deep analysis & partnerships which leverage existing efforts. Our team is passionate, entrepreneurial, fast- paced, and looking to significantly improve how communities around the country adapt to flooding and sea level rise.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Developer to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will be an extremely knowledgeable self-starter who is ready to utilize their skills to help our organization’s website stand out and is passionate about WordPress, JavaScript, PHP, and the serverless/ microservices architecture. If you want to work alongside immensely passionate and talented people, who are intent on helping flood-affected communities to adapt and thrive, we want to talk to you. This is a part-time contract or direct hire position with the opportunity to work remotely or in our headquarters in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities:

  • Performing regular website maintenance and monitoring performance
  • Enhancing our website by launching new pages, updating content, organizing blogs, and adding new features to our member portal
  • Maintaining data storage using a combination of MySQL, MongoDB, and Redis
  • Automating code through continuous integration (Travis CI)
  • Caching using a combination of Varnish and Redis

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience building custom themes and plugins in WordPress
  • Strong proficiency in the following programming languages: JavaScript (including basic transpiling and in conjunction with NodeJS package management), PHP, and CSS

(mostly PostCSS, experience with SASS/LESS is a plus)

  • Demonstrated ability working in React / Webpack
  • Excellent HTML skills
  • Proven track record utilizing Docker and Docker compose
  • Proficiency in Git (branching, PR, merging); experience with GitHub preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree required

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Container management & orchestration experience, especially with AWS and/or

Kubernetes

  • Basic DNS knowledge
  • Proficiency in SEO and/or analytics & event tracking, especially with Google Analytics
  • Ability to establish web development best practices
  • Skills in other programming languages such as Python and Shell
