Job Description

Cognosante is seeking an experienced Test Engineer (Tester) with a strong track record of delivering high caliber results with high client satisfaction. The successful candidate must be energetic, communicative, intelligent, motivated, and have a passion and aptitude for ensuring software quality. The Tester will act on behalf of business stakeholders, playing a key role on agile scrum development teams, working closely with developers and other stakeholders to understand functional requirements, acceptance criteria, and technical and security concerns, and will implement automated testing in support of DevOps practices. They will ensure that testing artifacts are maintained appropriately, as required by the applicable SDLC processes. They must scope and define test plans for the team in support of overall program roadmaps, releases, and sprints. Superior communication and collaboration skills are essential to this role. The ideal candidate will have a knowledge of VA, Community Care, and VIP. Expertise in Rational Team Concert is desired.

Key responsibilities

  • Be an advocate for our VA customer stakeholders and the ultimate beneficiaries of our solution - our Nation’s Veterans
  • Assist in the testing and documentation steps for each part of the testing process
  • Plan, organize, execute, and report on large testing efforts, including regression and load testing
  • Support the resolution for quality issues for the testing effort, both for processes and deliverables, by facilitating root cause analysis, taking corrective action, and escalating as needed, to resolve problems and achieve results
  • Identify and analyze quality trends as part of the testing effort and refer any realized issues to the appropriate staff
  • Initiate continual improvement to all testing quality assurance processes
  • Define tests driven by story acceptance criteria (including functional, load, and performance tests) and applicable project standards
  • Create, implement, and maintain test automation frameworks and solutions in support of continuous integration and delivery
  • Collaborate with Testing Team members and other staff in defining test automation techniques and methods
  • Assist release engineering in creating automated build verification and system integration test frameworks and tests
  • Participate effectively in estimation, planning, cost-of-quality, and quality risk analysis
  • Participate in project-wide reviews of requirements, system architecture, and detailed design documents
  • Identify process improvement opportunities
  • Clearly communicate goals, objectives, and methods to the test team
  • Clearly communicate status, issues, and plans to test manager and client stakeholders
  • Demonstrate completed user stories and increments to business stakeholders
  • Develop presentations and project documents
  • Collaborate with program management, VA stakeholders, the program team, and Cognosante management as to ensure a high level of quality across the project to ensure its success
  • Interact effectively and professionally with clients, stake-holders, partners, sub-contractors, and vendors recognizing you will be the face of Cognosante in many conversations
  • Develop a keen understanding of program goals and requirements and develop a vision to both meet the customer’s current needs, and for evolution of the program to meet changing client needs
  • Anticipate project challenges and risk scenarios and prepare, lead, and execute proactive mitigation strategies to ensure optimal results
  • Meet individual potential and performance expectations
  • Maintain knowledge of VA rules and regulations
  • Plan, monitor, and control relevant tasks outlined in the contract and statement of work
  • Understand and comply with Cognosante’s COMPASS Management Methodology
  • Understand and comply with the Veteran’s Affairs Veteran-focused Integration Process (VIP)
  • Other duties as assigned by project leadership

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (Computer Science, Electronics Engineering or other engineering or technical discipline is required)
  • 8 years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for education
  • Experience in the coordination and execution of test events in accordance with approved test plans, procedures and scripts
  • Knowledge and skills to ensure that test environments are set up accurately, able to create test reports
  • Thorough knowledge and ability to test IT hardware, software, systems and networks

Additional Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with maintaining strong testing processes and procedures
  • Excellent knowledge of testing methodologies
  • Ability to negotiate and prioritize competing incoming requests while considering timelines and limited resources
  • Demonstrated experience of DevOps and Continuous Integration environments, particularly with regard to test automation
  • Experience working in an agile scrum solution development environment
  • Ability to demonstrate solution features to stakeholders, share knowledge, and provide tool and process guidance
  • Strong ability to foster collaborative work in dynamic team environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal including the ability to communicate with brevity and clarity
  • Open to occasional travel (5% - 10% to VA and Vendor locations)
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, including MS Project and SharePoint
  • Proficiency and effectiveness in using collaboration tools, such as Skype or GoToMeeting
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a VA NACI clearance
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends as required
  • Passionate and motivated self-starter that excels in a dynamic, fast-paced environment requiring only limited supervision

  • Demonstrated success on a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) project
  • Experience with the VA’s Veteran-focused Integration Process (VIP) framework
  • Experience with COTS testing
  • Experience with VistA
  • Experience with test automation
  • Experience with Rational Performance Tester and Rational Function Tester
  • Experience with Java, C#, and other coding languages
  • Experience with VA and/or IBM Rational Tool Suite
  • Experience with 508 Compliance testing
  • Experience working in a CMMI-DEV or CMMI-SVC environment at Maturity Level 3 or above
  • Demonstrated experience working with a geographically dispersed project team

Job Types: Full-time, Contract
