The key purpose of the role is to provide specialist graphic design services and includes the use of technical and creative expertise. The graphic artists will combine communication skills with creative design and technical expertise to produce all designed artwork/illustrative material for exhibitions, reports, brochures, books, documents and web page design for the promotion of all the services across Wiltshire Council and its partners.

The overall aim is to improve the effectiveness of the Council’s communication services by increasing accessibility for all sections of the community and by producing art work and illustrative materials that enhances the council’s brand.

Specifics:

  • Using technical design expertise to determine the best use of graphic software and techniques and available technology to produce illustrative material for the council.
  • Using creative expertise to advise on what is possible and producing proposals including, for example, the range and scope of the work and realistic timescales and costs.
  • Interpreting the customers’ business needs and developing a concept to suit their purpose.
  • Providing creative and technical advice to services and other customers on design options including layout, pagination, paper material and font styles, and advise on constraints imposed by the corporate brand and style.
  • Using innovation to redefine a design brief within the constraints of cost and time
  • Delivering design projects to specification and on time
  • Use technical expertise to operate, advise and use the equipment available, including creative design hard ware and software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark express, Freehand, Acrobat, Flash, Indesign, Pagemaker, Word, Excel and Dreamweaver)
  • Co-ordinating all aspects of the graphic design services from liaising with customers / services / colleagues; to scheduling the production of designs.
  • Responsibility for all council creative design hard ware and software.
  • Ensuring all artwork, illustrations and other design work adheres to the council’s brand and identity and is suitable for publication.
  • Keeping up to date with best practice and new developments in graphic design, and explore new techniques to ensure the council is abreast of current design trends.
  • Undertaking rigorous quality control of all work, ensuring compliance with current corporate brand and identity guidelines.

Pay Rate: £12.81 per hour PAYE

This is a temporary, but possibly long term role.

“Essential Requirements” – Please check to ensure that your CV addresses the following items:

  • Your recent UK working experience going back at least 5 years, or full employment history if you have been working for fewer years than this.
  • Your availability to work either immediately, or at short notice.
  • Foundation degree, HND or degree in graphic design
  • Knowledge and experience of desktop design software (Photoshop, Quark Xpress, Dreamweaver for example or other equivalent industry standards)
  • Experience of developing and presenting design storyboards and prototypes for services who require artwork and illustrative materials
  • Experience in the use of graphic software and techniques and available technology to produce illustrative materials.
  • Creative flair and originality
  • A strong visual sense

Other preferable/desirable details to include on your CV, if applicable:

  • Any relevant qualifications held or being studied for

Anticipated Length of Assignment: All of our roles are technically temporary, though opening assignments can be and often are, extended by clients on a longer term basis and can sometimes become permanent. This opening assignment is for 1-2 months.

Hours per week: 37 Monday – Friday, normal working hours
