We are looking for a Senior Python/Django Developer with DevOps / Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) experience to join a Central Government department at a crucial and exciting time.

This is a contract post for 6 months with the view to be extended, based in Central London, although the role will be remote working initially.

Working within the SRE/WebOps team, the Senior Python Developer will follow the Department's software development standards, including 48h to delivery principles. They will proactively seek to address roadblocks affecting assignments. They will demonstrate collaboration within and between product delivery teams; reusing and sharing components, contributing to standards development, and sharing knowledge. They will ensure that delivered products are resilient, scalable and report errors only when human intervention is needed.

There is an expectation that they will liaise with other DevOps/WebOps developers and Technical Architects within the department to share tools and knowledge where needed.

The successful Senior Python/Django Developer will have some DevOps experience (AWS, GOV.UK PaaS).

Responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day responsibility for working within the product team to support, maintain and develop services
  • Work with appropriate members of the delivery team to build appropriate Back End infrastructure to allow the visual display of data on a web-based Front End.
  • Perform maintenance tasks as required for the accuracy and integrity of services built and managed by the Tools team on the flagship website.
  • Building web and mobile products to serve user needs.
  • Building up a useful, robust automated test suite to support a Continuous Deployment environment.
  • Being involved in the wider web development community, identifying good practices we can adopt and sharing our experiences.
  • Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques with the wider team, both developers and non-developers.
  • Taking part in 2nd-line support of applications and platforms, including occasional support outside of office hours.

Specialist skills

Essential:

  • Extensive Python 3 expertise
  • Extensive Django and Django Rest Framework expertise
  • DevOps experience (AWS, GOV.UK PaaS)
  • Good database knowledge (Postgresql)
  • Good Elasticsearch knowledge
  • Is comfortable to write unit tests, integration tests
  • Is comfortable with Git
  • Experience in interfacing REST, SOAP

Desirables:

  • Bonus for setting up open source data pipeline frameworks
  • Bonus API design
