Overview

MSC is searching for a Senior Network Engineer to provide technical support and guidance on a variety of hands-on engineering design, integration and maintenance projects at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute on Aging (NIA).The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is meeting the challenges of an aging population through its ongoing mission to: Disseminate information about aging and advances in research to the public, health care professionals, and the scientific community, among a variety of audiences. Support and conduct genetic, biological, clinical, behavioral, social, and economic research on aging.

This opportunity is a full-time position with MSC and is based in Bethesda, MD, but allows for remote work, with allowance for partial remote work. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in switching/routing/firewalls/load balancing and will be well versed in cloud-based solutions. This is a great opportunity to work with the onsite team to build a framework for enterprise cloud policy/procedure.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and other network and system problems.
  • Replace faulty network hardware and cabling components when required.
  • Design and implement solutions in multiple cloud provider IaaS environments (AWS, Azure, Google).
  • Administer cloud firewall resources (Azure, AWS, Google).
  • Create and maintain cloud express routes, cloud direct connections, cloud application gateways, and cloud network interfaces.
  • Install, configure, and administer Cisco and Extreme Networks switching and routing devices and appliances.
  • Install and maintain VMware virtual networking, virtual distributed switches, VMware kernel ports, and iSCSI connections.
  • Maintain and administer on-prem firewall appliances and load balancers (Palo Alto, F5).
  • Install and maintain copper and fiber optic cables, such as CAT5, SE, CAT6, low voltage cables, and fiber while adhering to best practices, industry standards, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Confer with network users about any network outages and resolution of system problems.
  • Advise IT management and senior leadership on recommended improvements to the current infrastructure.
  • Operate master consoles to monitor the performance of networks and computer systems.
  • Perform disaster recovery operations and data backups as required.
  • Develop and maintain technical SOP documentation and topology drawings for cloud resources.
  • Establish a governance framework for implementing enterprise cloud solutions.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
  • 5+ years of relevant experience creating and supporting enterprise networking solutions with products from Extreme Networks, Cisco, Palo Alto, and F5
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cloud providers technologies to advise, identify, create, and deliver infrastructure services and architecture for new systems including the transition from legacy system to cloud infrastructure
  • Strong knowledge of a wide range of cloud services and solutions, including serverless architecture
  • Thorough analysis and problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively troubleshoot, propose new solutions, resolve, and/or escalate as appropriate
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS or MS Azure certification
  • Cisco and/or Extreme Networks certification
