About SmartBuilder

We are the developers of SmartBuilder authoring software for eLearning, and we have a Consulting Services team that produces performance-based, engaging, and accessible eLearning for companies and organizations of all sizes. We are a small company with a handful of long-term employees and contractors, and almost all of us work remotely from our home offices.

A typical project team includes a project manager, a developer, a UI designer, and an instructional designer (that’s you!). We communicate frequently, and collaborate at all stages of design and development.

This role is:

  • Remote: You will need a quiet workspace, a webcam and a good quality headset for virtual meetings
  • Contract (1099) to start, with the intention of a long-term relationship and the potential to convert to employee status if there is a good fit
  • Part-time with an average of 20 hours a week (it could be much more but it won’t be much less), with the potential to grow to full-time

Hours can be flexible, but we require some consistent availability during business hours (west coast) so that we can schedule meetings and working sessions.

Your Responsibilities

As a Senior Instructional Designer, you will be the primary point of contact on projects with SmartBuilder clients, and you will follow SmartBuilder’s design and development process, collaborating closely with all members of the SmartBuilder project team.

Some travel may be required.

Activities that the Instructional Designer typically facilitates include:

  • Preliminary review of any pre-existing materials provided by the client
  • Working closely with the client project lead and SMEs to establish the business goal for the client and formulate learning objectives
  • Brainstorming ideas for eLearning interactions to help learners practice real-world behaviors
  • Collaborating with developers to design and prototype interactions
  • Developing content in close collaboration with client SMEs
  • Conducting user testing and implementing feedback from clients and reviewers
  • Maintaining and updating course content after the initial launch

When not heads-down on your primary project(s), if time allows, you will also assist other team members with tasks such as:

  • Copyedit courses in development or implement content updates on existing courses, including: ensuring clear and consistent learner instructions and feedback are provided; adding structure such as page titles, headings, etc.
  • Transfer content edits from docs to a spreadsheet tracker and verify changes after developer has implemented them
  • Assist with writing assessment/quiz questions
  • Oversee user testing for courses in development, including: scheduling, attending, and facilitating sessions; reviewing, collating, and prioritizing feedback; recommending and discussing changes with the client; and implementing changes
  • QA courses at various stages of development, including: verifying content updates, accessibility testing using a screenreader and/or keyboard, and providing feedback on UI design

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree and at least 5 years of work experience in instructional design or closely related field
  • Strong project management skills, including planning, scheduling, time management, managing multiple tasks/projects at a time
  • Professional poise in working with various stakeholders across all levels of our clients’ organization, and a commitment to doing whatever it takes to deliver quality results
  • Experience using G Suite tools including Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides
  • Excellent writing and editing proficiency for global English
  • First class communication skills with the ability to articulate complex concepts in a simple way
  • Ability to accept critical feedback from team members and clients with grace and humility, and willingness to compromise to meet client needs

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA or BS degree, or advanced degree, in a relevant field such as instructional technology, educational technology, organizational development, etc., or completion of relevant professional development courses or certifications
  • Ability to provide eLearning work samples, including job aids, storyboards and scripts, or screenshots of courses you helped design and/or develop
  • Solid career progression in the field of instructional design including experience in designing and delivering training solutions to large organizations

  • eLearning development experience with authoring tools such as SmartBuilder, Captivate, Camtasia, Storyline, or similar
  • Experience using screen-capture software to produce simulations, such as Camtasia or Captivate
  • Some knowledge of HTML development, especially with respect to accessibility
  • An eye for visual design

Application Process

  • Qualified candidates will be invited to complete a short work assignment to enable us to assess your on-the-job ID skills. The assignment will take 2 – 4 hours to complete. Completing the assignment will require a Google account and some familiarity with G Suite tools.
  • In your cover letter, please indicate that you are aware of this requirement and if selected, will be ready to proceed with the assignment, and please provide an email address associated with a Google Account. If you have an @gmail.com address, you already have a Google Account. Otherwise, you can sign up for a Google Account using another email address at this link: https://accounts.google.com/signup
  • We will evaluate the assignments and invite selected candidates to a short phone interview to confirm availability and basic qualifications. We may or may not have a project available at that time.
  • We will keep your information on file until we have a project that seems like a good fit. If you are still available and interested, we will schedule an interview to assess your qualifications for that project.
