­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Your role

The Senior Linux Administrator will be a key technical engineer in the delivery of the payment gateway services, utilising their excellent technical knowledge and experience to proactively define and develop the environment and procedures, and be an expert trouble-shooter for major or critical service incidents.

As a member of the Operations Infrastructure teams, the primary function of the role is to ensure the Linux and Middleware-based infrastructure is secure, robust, resilient and compliant to PCI standards.

The Senior Engineer reports into the Linux Team Leader. This role holds accountability for Middleware service projects and production support to the BPS payment gateway services Smartpay -S and Smartpay -B.

  • Ownership and leadership of technical resolution for high severity production incidents and Problems
  • Adherence to Barclays standards for change control, Middleware security and Middleware patterns.
  • Take part in the technical team during disaster recovery and business continuity exercises
  • Define operational procedures and documentation
  • Define and package applications
  • Liaise with Development, Architecture and Operations Teams and identify requirements, incorporating them into the platform and deployed applications
  • Provide on-call rota support where required
  • Lead and define network delivery requirements for Service Improvement Unit initiatives
  • Design and lead internal projects and deliveries aligned with the Middleware roadmap
  • Support the architect and product teams in developing the Middleware roadmap.
  • Identify new technologies and services to transform the Middleware service offering
  • Mentor the global technical team to build a high-performing technical delivery environment

Person Specification

  • Specialist in Red Hat middleware products administration, especially in JBOSS Enterprise App Platform (v5 and later), JBOSS Operations Network, and FUSE.
  • Familiar with container technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Openshift v3.
  • Specialist in containerized application development and deployment.
  • Have a good understanding of the ITIL framework, vocabulary and best practices.
  • Experienced in working with Vendor technical support staff, including vendor development teams
  • Experience with defining technical plans and procedures
  • Proficient in Configuration Management with a strong background in Scripting.
  • Passionate about middleware workflow automation, desire to automate functions.
  • Familiar with RHEL, JBOSS and Apache performance tuning and capacity management on critical customer-facing systems and high-volume payments services.
  • Experience of working in a highly regulated environment, the associated processes and tools
  • Have a strong working knowledge of Barclays infrastructure components and the processes required to maintain the infrastructure.
  • Have a good understanding of the business areas and application / service components used and an appreciation of applications from both a technical and business perspective.

Essential Skills

RHCSA minimum (RHEL 6 / RHEL 7) - or equivalent provable RHEL knowledge!

Strong experience in administering Red Hat JBoss products such as EAP, FUSE, and JBoss ON.

Working experience with Java application containers, Docker, and Kubernetes/Openshift Platform.

Proven experience with Automating operational processes and build processes using tools like Chef, Puppet, Ansible, Jenkins, Artefactory. Continuous integration/deployment and Git advantageous.

Strong middleware configuration skills with JBoss EAP 5/6/7 (best practice, performance tuning, etc.)

Strong emphasis on CHEF skills, including writing deployment and test scripts.

Desirable skills

RHCJA preferred

Good working knowledge of Apache/mod_cluster/mod_proxy/mod_jk and RHEL HA Proxy.

Experience supporting Java applications (Basic Java development skills advantageous)

Good troubleshooting skills around application performance and deployment.

Strong skills in developing app monitoring solutions.

Understanding of MicroService architectures.

Experience with app security configuration/best practices e.g. SSL, encryption hardware, certificates.

Specific requirements:

As part of this role you may be required to work outside of normal office hours including weekends, this could be in The Logic Group premises in Fleet or in various data centre environments. All technical operations engineers are required take part in out of hours support via an on call rota.
