London Borough of Hackney is seeking an experienced Frontend Developer to join its Development team for a minimum of 10 months. The post holder will apply appropriate tools and programming in line with latest industry trends to develop front-end applications for high-profile web projects.

It is essential that candidates have Agile experience and are able to articulate user stories into prototypes and web pages. Experience of using Contentful would be a huge advantage.

Essential experience & skills required include:

  • 4+ years’ experience as a frontend developer.
  • Agile experience.
  • Fundamentals including HTML, JavaScript, CSS, CSS preprocessors such as Sass and LESS.
  • JavaScript frameworks - AngularJS, React.
  • JS-based build tools - Grunt, Gulp, Bower.
  • Libraries - jQuery or Backbone.js.
  • Front-end (CSS) frameworks eg Foundation or Bootstrap.
  • Front-end integration with APIs using JSON/JSON schemas.
  • Unit testing and test-driven development.
  • Familiarity with API Creation and RESTful services.

Specifics include:

  • Working with other members of the multidisciplinary prototyping team, specify and design end-to-end digital services, covering, for example: user need, business objectives, scope, constraints (such as performance, resources etc.), evaluation and prioritisation of user stories and identification and mitigation of technical risks.
  • Take responsibility for the design, coding, testing and documentation of end-to-end digital services to meet user needs.
  • Plan, design and conduct tests of programmes; correct errors and re-test to achieve an error-free result.
  • Conduct reviews of user stories and code, and take part in reviews of own work Lead Front End Developer and lead reviews of colleagues’ work, ensuring that the work of the team is consistent with the Digital Service Standard.
  • Take responsibility for the management of the testing activities within a development project, overseeing the planning of the system and acceptance tests and coordinating the execution of these plans.
  • Plan, arrange and lead meetings, workshops and relations with users during test planning and throughout subsequent development and testing activities.
  • Take part in evaluations and reviews of programming methods, tools and standards.
  • Contribute to the development of appropriate design standards, methods and tools and ensure they are applied effectively and that all work is documented using the appropriate standards, methods and tools.
  • Lead, motivate and inspire team members and facilitate dialogue with them regarding expectations, progress, performance and development needs.
  • Ensure the security and integrity of data by encouraging and enforcing adherence to IT standards that ensure availability, integrity, authentication and confidentiality.
  • Identify risks, coordinate risk assessment, manage agreed actions (which may involve acceptance of risk, risk reduction or mitigations to avoid / eliminate risks), and monitor the status of risks on an ongoing basis.

Pay Rate: £203.72 per day PAYE

This is a temporary, but possibly long term role.

    • Proficient in the digital development techniques and methods required to deliver modern, high quality user interfaces and interactions.
    • Proficient in understanding the IT/IS infrastructure, operating systems, configurations and the IT applications and service processes used within the organisation.
    • Proficient in testing techniques used to plan and execute software tests of all application components (functional and non-functional) to verify that the software satisfies specified requirements and to detect errors.
    • Proficient in applying methods and techniques for structured reviews, including reviews of technical work products, test plans, business cases, architectures and any other key deliverables. Examples: peer review, formal technical review.
    • Proficient in understanding corporate, industry and professional standards, policies, regulations, compliance and codes of conduct associated with the role.
    • Ability to work independently and manage own workload.
    • Decision-making skills.
    • Strong influencing and negotiation skills.
    • Builds appropriate and effective business relationships.
