My public sector client is looking for a interim Digital Developer on a 3 month contract.

This is both a technical and a management role. You'll probably have to manage and work with developers, either in house or those recruited through a service contract. You may help us recruit these specialists and ensure that we're building our capability and capacity to continually deliver and run good digital service.

Key responsibilities

As a lead developer, you will:

  • guide the ways in which the team works, working closely with a product manager and delivery manager
  • be involved in identifying appropriate technology and approaches, deciding when software should be written
  • provide technical leadership, coach and mentor your team
  • promote knowledge sharing and adoption of good practice
  • build RESTful web services to serve a variety of citizen and government needs, taking responsibility for the quality of code you produce
  • implement toolkits and APIs for purposes such as integration, performance optimisation, security and scalability
  • build automated tests to support our continuous deployment environment
  • lead the technical design of systems and services and partner with our internal team, other Government Departments and external suppliers to help us build good digital services that meet the Government Service Standard
  • Lead on security and privacy issues for your service (or services), working with the Technical Design Authority to mitigate risks
  • actively explore opportunities for cross-government alignment in order to realise benefits
  • advocate Agile delivery methods and supporting new and existing team members in their development of adopting Agile best practice
  • switch between different problems and responsibilities and remaining directly involved in service delivery
  • help support procurement activities and recruitment for other technical specialists

Essential skills/criteria

You should be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • proficient in a wide range of modern technical systems, having worked in software development at a senior level before
  • understand software design principles
  • take a systematic approach to solving problems
  • have experience of using testing to validate solutions
  • understand agile environments and version control
  • know what good looks like for a high-performing software development team and know how to get there
  • be able to translate technical concepts between our software engineering, delivery management and service management teams
  • understand and resolve technical disputes across varying levels of complexity and risk
  • be able partner with business and technology stakeholders to translate business problems into technical designs
  • have experience in identifying and addressing wider technical implications relating to the broader business strategy
  • evidence of where you have created optimal designs through an iterative process (ie Agile), and where you have aligned user needs with the system requirements and organisational objectives
  • examples of working collaboratively both within your team and with other external partners to achieve collective goals successfully.
  • look out for modern technology, particularly Ruby, Python, Node JS, references to TDD (test driven development), BDD (behaviour driven development), RESTful APIs,
  • look out for agile, SCRUM
  • Experience in government departments, particularly GDS, MOJ, HMRC, DWP
  • should be a people person and a leader, someone who can persuade
  • should be interested in user research, not just a developer
  • really looking for someone with extensive background in development, but interested in moving into a leadership role
  • you should REALLY want to be coding all the time

£600-650 day rate.

Send me your C.V. if interested.

Kind regards,

Henry.
