We are looking for an experienced Backend Ruby on Rails Developer with good Python knowledge to join a Central Government department at a crucial and exciting time.

This is an urgent contract post for 10 months initially.

This is an exciting time to join this Government department.

Ruby on Rails Developers will follow the Department’s software development standards, including 48h to delivery principles. They will proactively seek to address roadblocks affecting assignments. They will demonstrate collaboration within and between product delivery teams; reusing and sharing components, contributing to standards development, and sharing knowledge. They will ensure that delivered products are resilient, scalable and report errors only when human intervention is needed.

The developers will be working as part of an agile team alongside, user researcher, UX designer, front end developer, lead by a product owner and delivery manager. There is an expectation that they will liaise with other backend developers and Technical Architects within the department to share tools and knowledge where needed.

Backend Ruby on Rails Developer responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day responsibility for working within the product team to support, maintain and develop services built and managed by the Tools team.
  • Work with appropriate members of the delivery team to build appropriate back-end infrastructure to allow the visual display of data on a web-based front end.
  • Perform maintenance tasks as required for the accuracy and integrity of services built and managed by the Tools team on the flagship website.
  • Building web and mobile products to serve user needs.
  • Building up a useful, robust automated test suite to support a Continuous Deployment environment.
  • Being involved in the wider web development community, identifying good practices we can adopt and sharing our experiences.
  • Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques with the wider team, both developers and non-developers.
  • Taking part in 2nd-line support of applications and platforms, including occasional support outside of office hours.

Specialist skills

Essential

• Extensive Ruby on Rails expertise
• Knowledge of Python
• Good database knowledge (postgresql)
• Extensive web frameworks expertise: django, flask
• Is comfortable in TDD and BDD environment, is comfortable to write unit tests, integration tests
• Elasticsearch
• Worked in devops culture and can automate deployment pipeline

Desired

• Experience in data science
• Desire and ability to learn other programming languages
• Good OAuth 2 knowledge
