Who is VecTech?
VecTech, LLC is a for-profit social enterprise working to empower the global fight against mosquito borne disease through better data. Mosquitoes are vectors for a multitude of diseases, killing up to 500,000 people each year, with hundreds of millions affected by the diseases they carry across high, middle, and low income countries. There are global efforts to reduce mosquito borne disease and even eradicate them in some cases; many organizations have signed onto ZeroBy40, a goal to eradicate Malaria globally by 2040. But in order to achieve these aspirational goals, it is painfully clear to the public health community that we need better tools. Join VecTech in delivering modern data tools to achieve a healthier, more sustainable global community.

What does VecTech do?
VecTech provides organizations with accurate and affordable data on their mosquito populations. There are 3000 different species of mosquitoes, which carry different diseases and have different behaviors that call for different controls. Without quality data on where the mosquitoes are, what type they are, and how many they are, an organization cannot effectively protect public health and prevent disease. Current methods of gathering this data are inadequate for the cause of eradication: they are too slow, too expensive, or too inaccurate. VecTech is developing a suite of hardware and software tools which bring this process into the 21st century, leveraging artificial intelligence, global connectivity, and the internet of things.

What will you do?
Computer Vision is at the core of our innovations. As a Computer Vision Engineer, responsibilities may include:

  • Development and improvement of the following through application of state of the art methods in computer vision, and through development of some novel methods for unsolved problems in the field:
  • Fine grained classification of mosquito characteristics such as species and sex;
  • Machine learning in the wild and novelty detection - developing practical algorithms for deployment which are not confused by specimens outside the primary distribution;
  • Deep object detection networks for specific imaging scenarios;
  • Segmentation, attribute labeling, and human-AI interaction;
  • Preparing for various deployment scenarios through domain invariant learning, domain adaptation, and/or generalization;
  • Applying and iterating internally developed methods to other vector insects,
  • Coordination with Software Engineers in preparing models for deployment and creating data pipelines.
  • Staying up to date on the state of the art methods in computer vision as they relate to the tasks at hand;
  • Coordination with database development activities to optimize collection and labelling for deep learning tasks;
  • Design reviews with internal and external partners;
  • Preparation of reports and manuscripts for the internal documentation of activities and for publication of research in partnership with universities.

VecTech is a start-up, and though we are very focused on our mission, the path to achieve it is dynamic. This means that responsibilities within the organization are dynamic, and things will change; you will likely have to learn things rapidly on the job, and be pushed outside of your comfort zone, but that is the nature of startups. We find it exhilarating and we hope you will join us!

What’s it like working with VecTech?
As a social enterprise, VecTech cares deeply about people. We try to create an open and inclusive workplace, which operates on trust, care, and passion for what we do. Work life balance is highly valued at VecTech, and we make space for that in our policies:

Flex schedules are acceptable and encouraged to fit your life schedule. We generally expect you to be available Monday-Friday during the day for scheduled meetings and team communications (able to answer questions etc.)
  • Paid vacation is flexible and there is no set limit - We operate on trust. All vacation time should be approved ahead of time, tracked, and not negatively impact product development. Keep yourself energized and charged for high quality work. Take what you need to care for yourself.
  • Health insurance - Being small gives us some flexibility. We will work with you to explore options and pursue the best available option for you.
  • Remote work (during and after the pandemic) - life is dynamic! Along with flexible schedules, you can expect the freedom to work remotely on a regular basis. Being in person may be occasionally required, and generally encouraged. We adhere to recommendations of public health officials and experts, and are operating entirely remote until it is safe to do otherwise.
